Ikat Pillows on a Budget
Lately I've had people come over to my house and everyone says something about my pillows on my couch and I thought I would share their coming about.
Me being the decorator nerd that I am I have been CRUSHING on ikat pillows, the current hot thing right now. Wanting some sooo bad but even on One King's Lane they are still upwards or $65 a piece. With kids and a dog? Hahaha, no.
Something similar to this.
So I just consoled myself and decided it would be one those things that I just won't be able to have. Then fate would have it I was walking through World Market and they had these super cute Ikat cloth napkins for $4. And shut up kids, I just went to their site to get this pic and they are on sale for $1.98! Go getcha some.
Checked the measurement they are 26x26 the exact size of a pillow. I picked up two, because I'm super cheap and I didn't want two per pillow because that would up the cost the whole pillow, $8 for napkins then the cost of the pillow just wouldn't be worth the saving for me.
For the back of the pillows I knew I'd come up with something. Tip for you, if you ever come across basic fabric or scraps for cheap- get it. To my husbands disgust, I have fabric that I stockpile for occasions like this. I just went through my piles and I had this little roll of linen I got for cents at Hobby Lobby. I knew I wanted to leave the edges rough and that made making them even easier.
Then after I had sewn them together before I sewed the pillow in I just thought I needed to add something a little extra. So I pulled out my cricut, freezer paper and fabric paint and cut out some stencils with the freezer paper. Just so I'm not talking a different language to people, if you cut out an image (cricut or freehand) on freezer paper you iron the waxy side onto your fabric or item it will stick and become a stencil. Then you paint in the negative area, let it dry, pull off the wax paper and voila! Perfect and easy. My kind of project.
Easy peasy kids. I did this on a Sunday afternoon when I just get that itch to do a project.
I know I've inspired you all to pull out your sewing machines, right? Just kidding. Well I hope it at least gets you looking at things differently. Not everything has to be used for it's intended purpose.
Get the look for less.
